We have written extensively in the past about hunting lionfish at our island at Glover’s Reef in Belize. Although our island is in a national marine reserve where fishing other than catch-and-release is outlawed, we are allowed to spear the invasive lionfish. The lionfish at Glover’s Reef are a huge problem – but we do what we can to keep their numbers down, especially near our i

Blue Ventures Expeditions has a series of educational vacations in Belize I REALLY wish I could go on. Unfortunately, the dates don’t work for me, but I’m hoping some of you can go and then write a blog post about it! Blue Ventures’ new lionfish projects start this May to help manage and monitor the progress of the invasive fish in the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve, which is about

In November of last year a Brown Booby suddenly showed up at our island and started roosting on the ground near one of our beach cabanas. We rarely see any Boobies out at Glover’s Reef since it is so far from the island these birds nest on along the barrier reef, and they are very fussy about where they live from what we understand. At first we thought it was injured because it just sat on a log

We recently heard from one of our wonderful past guests, Susan Saraf. Susan has visited us twice on our Belize island, but both times she joined us, it was ages ago (we hope she will come back someday soon). Susan just sent me a bunch of photos from early 2000, which was only about a year and half after Hurricane Mitch, which really rearranged everything on the island. As a result of that hurrican

We employ as 12V electrical system on the island, using solar panels and wind generators to charge a bank of batteries from which we draw power for our lights, water pumps, and refrigeration systems. The system is very efficient and we love using a renewable energy source so we can do away with noisy gas generators. We also appreciate the fact that the system is very safe since it is such low volt

Every week we serve fresh coconut pie on our Belize island. We have about 1000 coconut trees, so we like to serve fresh coconut dishes whenever possible. The coconuts are picked that very day, it doesn’t get any fresher than that! In addition to coconut pie, we also serve coconut rice, fresh roasted coconut, and Belizean Fry Jacks and Belizean Rice & Beans made with coconut milk from fre

On the island we have two types of land crabs who scavenge for food. The ubiquitous hermit crabs can be seen night and day on their ceaseless wanderings in search of food, but the Blue Crabs are seen only at night. The Blue Crabs live in burrows and hide during the day. The burrows often go below the island’s shallow water table, but crabs have gills and can breathe both underwater and on la

We just love our guests. They are always sending us amazing photos and recipes after they get home from our island in Belize. Yesterday my email box held a wonderful surprise from a recently returned guest… a feature length Belize travel article by Karen Lippold, which she has submitted to the Washington Post! Her title: “Belize: ATOLLtally Awesome Vacation”. Pending publication,
